Taraporewala Aquarium – Mumbai’s own fish park
Inaugurated in 1951 by India’s first President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the Taraporewala aquarium is named after a Parsi nature enthusiast D.B Taraporewala, who contributed significantly to its making.
The aquarium was renovated and re-opened to the general public on March, 2015. It parallels the best aquariums of the world and has a 360-degree glass tunnel and with LED lights. These lights render better visibility to the marine life. The museum houses special pools where visitors can touch the fishes like starfish and sea urchins. The entrance has a tunnel-shaped aquarium, leading the way to the main aquarium area. Owned by the fisheries department, it is the country’s oldest fish museum.
Being one of the enthralling places of attraction in Mumbai and situated on the iconic Marine Drive, it houses over 2000 fishes, of more than 400 different varieties from across the world, which include butterfly fishes like Chevron and Copperband, angelfishes like Blue Ring and damselfishes like Moontail and Cocoa. It also has species like batfish, octopus, sharks and stingray to its armory.

The aquarium also boasts of a 50-seater amphitheatre, which screens documentaries on marine ecosystems and coral life. It also has a fish spa filled with tiny fishes called Garra rufa. Here visitors can dip their feet for a soothing therapy. Special ‘moss’ water tanks have been installed for pregnant fishes. The oceanarium, made out of plexi-glass, at the foyer, resembles an underwater stroll for the visitors
Visitors are allowed from 10 o’clock in the morning till 5 o’clock in the evening and ticket charges are less than one USD, Photography is charged extra. The nearest railway station of Taraporewala aquarium is Charni Road, on the Western Railway.
